The Royal Irish Academy will host a Townhall meeting on the Future Earth initiative on 17 September 2014, in Academy House, Dublin.

The intended goal of the Townhall is to raise awareness of the Future Earth initiative across the Irish research community in the sciences, humanities and social sciences, and to communicate potential roles and opportunities for Irish researchers pertaining to Future Earth.

The Townhall will open with a keynote address from Professor Frans Berkhout, International Council for Science (ICSU) Interim Director of the Future Earth Programme. The Townhall will draw on international expertise, informing participants about current international developments in the Future Earth initiative. The European Alliance of Global Change Research Committees is represented by Vice-Chair Christoph Ritz (Director of ProClim- Forum for Climate and Global Change in Switzerland) and Executive Director Tanja Suni (Secretary General Future Earth Finland) who will share their experiences on Future Earth inititiative in their own countries and on the European level in general.

After lunch there will be a panel discussion with national experts offering an Irish perspective on the Future Earth Initiative. The Townhall will conclude with a general dialogue where all participants and the general audience will be encouraged to actively participate in the discussion. An overview of the Townhall, key themes and issues identified over the course of the day, will be circulated following the event by the Academy. This overview will feed into a formal report that the Academy will produce and disseminate to research funders, government departments and the general research community.
